Paddock

A floor worth parking on

The floor is the finish here. High build silver flake under a gloss coat, storage kept low and black along one wall, and the lighting aimed at the car rather than at the room.

What the room is made of

For the garage with something in it worth looking at, where storage should hold the tools and then get out of the way.

What we install for Paddock

Floor

The one to spend on. Silver flake broadcast to refusal, then a high build clear coat that gives the depth and the reflection. It is the layer that makes a garage photograph well, and it is the layer people skimp on.

Cabinets

Black, kept low: drawer banks and lower cabinets along one wall with a short run of uppers, so the sight line across the room stays open and the car reads first.

Worktop

Stainless the length of the run, lit from under the uppers. Detailing supplies live in the drawers under it rather than on a shelf.

Slatwall

A short pebble grey section over the worktop. Enough for the hoses, the pressure washer lance and the wash mitts, and no more.

Light

Recessed ceiling light for the room and a linear track aimed across the car for the highlights on the bodywork. Two circuits, because the second one is for looking rather than working.

The door, from the inside

Wall mount opener beside the torsion shaft, so the only things overhead are the door's two tracks. A rail and a trolley over the roof of the car is the thing that stops a garage like this reading finished.

Floor plan of a 24 by 24 foot garage: a low cabinet run and stainless worktop down the right wall, man door and window on the rear wall, and a coupe parked in the centre of the floor
The layout

Paddock, drawn to scale

A 24′ × 24′ build, 22′-8″ clear, with the car in the middle instead of a bay to one side. Storage stays low along one wall so nothing crosses the sight line, and the floor gets the money.

A finished garage gets a LiftMaster 98022 wall mount opener, bolted beside the torsion shaft rather than hung over the car. The overhead door still needs its run of ceiling to lift into, marked on the plan; taking the rail and the motor out of the middle of it is what leaves the rest free for a light, for overhead storage, or for nothing at all.

The same garage

Three views of one room

Every picture below is the room on that plan, from three positions in it. Same cabinets, same floor, same wall: what changes is where you are standing.

Products and colours are confirmed against samples at the design selection.

The lines

Two ways to build this look

Asked about Paddock

Is a flake floor slippery when the car comes in wet?

A gloss coat on its own is. We add a fine polymer grit to the top coat in the parking bays and leave it out of the walking bays, which keeps the reflection where you see it and the traction where you need it.
