Electrical & shop

Standard electrical covers lights and a few outlets. Everything past that, the welder, the compressor, the EV, is a panel and circuit question, cheapest to answer while the walls are open.

Power

  • Standard electricalStandard

Three interior outlets, two interior LED lights, one switch.

  • 100A subpanelUpgrade

Its own panel in the garage, capacity for a heater, a welder, a compressor and an EV at the same time, without running new feeds later.

    Why it's built this way

The feed from the house to the garage is the expensive part, and its size is fixed by the trench. Sizing the subpanel generously on day one costs a fraction of re-trenching for more capacity in five years.

  • EV-ready 240VUpgrade

A 240V circuit roughed to the parking bay, ready for a charger.

  • More outlets, inside and outUpgrade

Extra interior receptacles where the bench goes, and exterior weatherproof outlets for the block heater and the trimmer.

Upgrade

Bright 4000K linkable linear fixtures hung across the ceiling, 6000 lumens each, with a pull chain and a motion sensor. Run end to end they light the whole bay evenly instead of pooling in the middle.

Why it's built this way

Two bulbs light a garage; they do not light the work. A run of linear fixtures puts even light over the bench and both bays, which is the difference between a garage you store things in and one you use.

Upgrade

Linked hexagonal cells bolted flat to the ceiling in a honeycomb, wired as one run on a single switch. The array covers the whole bay instead of lighting a strip down the middle, so there is no shadow on the far side of the car.

Why it's built this way

It is the light people photograph their garage under, and it earns it: the cells throw from several directions at once, which is what kills the shadow you would otherwise stand in at the bench. Cell count is set to the bay at the electrical selection.

Upgrade

Flat edge-lit panels surface-mounted to the ceiling in a row. A uniform luminous face rather than a bright tube, so there is no glare spot to look into and nothing to see when you look up.

Why it's built this way

The choice when the ceiling should disappear. Even light with no hotspot suits a garage that stores more than it repairs, and the flat face collects far less dust than an open shop fixture.

Exterior wall lanterns

Standard

Three included on every build: one either side of the overhead door and one at the man door. Hammered matte black die-cast housing, smoke glass, 800 lumens at a warm 2700K, with a dusk-to-dawn sensor so nobody has to remember the switch. Wet-rated and cold-started to −20 °C, which matters here.

Motion flood + exterior add-ons

Upgrade

Twin-head motion flood over the apron, gable downlight, soffit pot lights, and a dusk-to-dawn photocell or smart switch for the standard lanterns.

Questions about electrical & shop? Bring them to the consultation — we answer them against your lot, not in the abstract.

Asked at most consults

What does an EV charger need?

A 240V circuit sized to the charger, usually on its own breaker. If the garage gets a subpanel, the circuit is a short run inside the building; without one, it has to come from the house panel, which is the expensive direction. Roughing it in during the build costs little.
