Heat & insulation

An unheated shell is the standard build. Everything here is about making the garage usable in January, insulation first, then the heater, in that order, because heat without insulation is money through the roof.

Insulation & drywall

Insulation + drywall package

Upgrade

Batt insulation in walls and ceiling, 6 mil vapour barrier, half-inch drywall hung. R-12 in standard walls, upgradeable to higher R-values.

Why it's built this way

Insulation is the difference between a heater that cycles a few times an hour and one that runs all day. The vapour barrier keeps the moisture from a warm garage out of the wall cavity, where it would condense against cold sheathing.

Mud, tape & paint

Upgrade

The finish coat on the drywall package: taped, mudded, sanded, primed and painted in your colour.

Heaters

Reznor, Beacon Morris and Mr. Heater logos: the unit heater brands ABLS installs

Unit heater, natural gas or electric

Upgrade

Wall- or ceiling-mounted, on a wall thermostat. For the workshop, the gym, or just a warm car on a cold morning. The units we install are Reznor, Beacon Morris and Mr. Heater.

Why it's built this way

Gas costs less to run and heats a big space fast; electric skips the gas line and venting. Which one wins depends on whether the lot already has gas at the garage, that is a site-visit question.

Built for heat from day one

A 15 mil vapour barrier under the slab

Upgrade

A pad upgrade, and the one to add if the garage may ever be heated.

Why it's built this way

Heat a slab with no barrier under it and ground moisture migrates up through the concrete indefinitely. The sheet goes in before the pour, so it is decided at the pad stage even when the heater comes years later.

Asked at most consults

What does it cost to run a heated garage?

It depends on insulation more than on the heater. An insulated garage held at working temperature through a Calgary winter costs a fraction of an uninsulated one, because the heater cycles instead of running. We size both at the consult based on how you plan to use the space.

Can I add heat later instead of now?

Yes. Two things are worth deciding during construction. The vapour barrier under the slab is an upgrade and has to go in before the pour. The insulation package matters too, because insulating finished walls later means opening them up.
